Logic Questions (Premium)

Logic is an important ingredient in both critical thinking and mathematical reasoning. While its roots are deep in philosophy, logic has wide applications in the area of mathematics in particular and in almost every aspect of human life. So it is important to learn some important laws of mathematical reasoning and established logical rules. For primary school students, it is also important for them to understand the basic concepts of deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning.

Below is a recap of the basic deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning concepts, for parents to refresh their memory.

Number Sense Questions (Premium)

Number sense is a set of skills that allow people to work with numbers. It involves understanding quantities, grasping concepts like more and less, larger and smaller, understanding the order of numbers in a list, making number comparisons, etc.

Many math contest questions require a strong number sense.Register for MathJump! Probability Questions (Premium)

Should primary school kids be taught probability? Many math educators believe that probability contents could be introduced within the context of mathematical literacy in the early school period. Through participation in the discussions on situations that are possible, impossible, certain or even equally probable, young children are taught the probability “alphabet”.

Another benefit of learning probability is that grades 3-4 students can do much better in math contests like Math Kangaroo if they have understanding of the basic concepts.

Multiplication concepts

Kids usually start learning multiplication in second grade, and division in third grade. However, to do well in math contests like Math Kangaroo, students need to grasp the concepts of multiplication and division from grade one. You do not need to ask your child to memorize the multiplication table, but you need to make sure your child understand the concepts, and can apply his/her understanding into solving word problems.

We have created some easy to intermediate level multipication word problems here:

Division concepts

Kids usually start learning multiplication in second grade, and division in third grade. However, to do well in math contests like Math Kangaroo, students need to grasp the concepts of multiplication and division from grade one. Your child does not need to know about more advanced division topics such as long division, but he/she has to know the basic concepts of division as the opposite of multiplication, with or without remainders.

Below are some easy to intermediate level division word problems involving division concepts here. Review the division concepts with your child by going through these questions. Or you can enroll in a MathJump! Like a Kangaroo 2023 Prep (Levels 3-4) class for our teacher to train your child get these skills.

Counting, Permutation, and Combination (Premium)

In regular school math, students won't learn permutation and combination until they are in high school. However, grades 1-2 students can do much better in math contests like Math Kangaroo if they have basic understanding of the concepts of counting, purmutation, and combination.

Below is a recap of the basic permutation and combination concepts, for parents to refresh their memory. Please note that parents are not supposed to teach their grades 1-2 child the permutation and combination formula; instead, parents should lead the child through practice questions to gain better understanding of the concepts.

Spatial sense - incomplete images (Premium)

In different math contests like Math Kangaroo, students often encounter questions where an image is incomplete because parts of the image are missing, and the students are asked to reconstruct the missing parts.

These "incomplete image" questions are essentially testing the students' ability to recognize patterns.

Patterns are at the heart of math. It is an ability to help us identify regularities, spot relationships, form generalizations, and make predictions based on our observations.

We have collected some "incomplete images" questions to train students with such graphic pattern recognition abilities.

Workload, speed, and time (Premium)

Many word problems test the students' understanding of the basic workload, work speed, and work time relationship:

workload = speed x time

It is very important for students taking math contests like Math Kangaroo to identify the values for workload, speed, and time by reading the problem descripion carefully, and use the workload formula to find out the expected answer. In math contest questions, the students may need to apply the workload formula multiple times, or in combination with other logical reasoning, in order to get to the right answer.

Teach your child the workload formula by yourself, or enroll in a MathJump! Like a Kangaroo 2023 Prep (Levels 3-4) class for our teacher to train your child get these skills.

Solving "missing number" questions (Premium)

In different math contests like Math Kangaroo, students often encounter the "missing number" types of questions.

These are the techniques for solving such problems. Reivew these techniques with your child, or enroll in a MathJump! Like a Kangaroo 2023 Prep (Levels 3-4) class for our teacher to train your child get these skills:

1. Basic arithmetic operations: addition, subtraction, and for grades 3 or above, multiplication, and division
2. Mental arithmetic calculation of numbers within 100 to 200
3. Find the imbalance of the 2 sides of the equation (in some cases, the imbalances exist multi-dimentionally)
4. Trial and error with different numbers
5. Estimation of possible number ranges (to reduce the combination of numbers needed to try)

Analyzing numeric relations (Premium)

In different math contests like Math Kangaroo, students will have a definite competitive edge if they are trained to analyze the numeric relations between different entities in word problems.

Usually, the steps for numeric relationship analysis involves:

1. List out the entities involved
2. Write down the known numeric relations
3. Use logical reasoning to deduce the implied relations, like if A is greater than B, and B is greater than C, then A must be greater than C too.
4. Apply the trial and error technique to see of all the given answer choices, which one will fit into the known and implied numeric relations.

Spatial sense - pattern fitting problems (Premium)

In different math contests like Math Kangaroo, students often encounter questions where they are asked to fit a small object with a certain patterns into the larger image.

These "pattern fitting" questions not only test the students' ability to recognize patterns, but also their ability to make optimum choices from a large combination of possible outcomes.

Working with min/max conditions (Premium)

In a large number of the questions from different math contests like Math Kangaroo, the numeric relationships between different entities are given as minimum or maximum conditions. Solving the problem requires a clear understanding of the minimum or maximum conditions, and deriving implied conditions from the min or max values.

For example, having a number group with the most possible numbers implies that the numbers in the group are usually among the smallest.

Sometimes, the min or max values are the expected solution. In this case, students should quickly identify the possible ranges of numeric values, and get used to a systematic method of trying from the smallest (or largest) possible value, working the way up to the expected min or max values.

Spatial sense - recognize morphed objects Part 1 (Premium)

Many students who perform well in math contests like Math Kangaroo have a well-developed ability to recognize two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects as they are folded, twisted, pressed, pushed, stretched, shrunk, expanded, etc. This ability can be trained by practice. We have collected here some "morphed objects" practice questions to train students for such abilities.

Using a tree diagram to list possible conditions (Premium)

In many math contests like Math Kangaroo, students need to have the ability to quickly organize information. In our many years' experience of preparing students for math contests, we found a tree diagram is often very useful for students to organize information in a structured, systematic way. With a tree diagram, it becomes easy for students to avoid gaps and overlaps in their analysis.
